Internship @ Ingram Micro – What is it like

Loupkin - Student from the University of Ghent - Internship at HR
Hi, I am Loupkin, a student Commercial Science (Handelswetenschappen) at the University of Ghent with a master in People and Organizational management. Within my study I had to do an internship and I had the opportunity to do it at the Human Resources department at Ingram Micro. Ingram who? I almost hear you, most of your friends and family say: well, first and foremost Ingram is the leading IT distributor in the world with branches all over the world. Secondly the chance that you bought IT products that passed through Ingram is very big: did you ever buy something at Media Markt or Bol.com? Well, then your product will most likely have come through Ingram Micro.

Why would I recommend an internship at Ingram Micro? Why not! It is a vibrant company with a very nice office and very social people. The open culture at the company is very motivating to work in, you can talk to everyone no matter what position they are in. My personal experience at the HR department was very pleasant: you will get many challenging projects with a lot of responsibility and freedom to deliver your own input. And if you are not sure or don’t know something: just ask your colleagues! They will always try to help. You can be sure that you will end up in a fast-moving business where people and results go hand in hand.

Personally, many of my tasks were projects where I worked on individually and frequently asked for feedback. One in particular will always stick by me: The onboarding checklist for new hires. From the day I started here at Ingram I saw a lot of opportunities they forgot or didn’t use and to work on that, see change happen and get recognition for what you did is just an amazing feeling! Through these projects you really feel part of an international organization. For example, when it was Belgium’s turn to bring a HR case study to the Global monthly update, they used my onboarding checklist as a case study. When you get feedback from so many different countries and people it feels kind of surreal, but awesome and I really appreciate what Ingram Micro has thought me in these few months.

If you want a challenging internship in a sector that is probably quite mysterious to you. I would highly recommend doing it at Ingram Micro. You will not only learn the trade you studied for, but also get to know a whole new sector and way of doing business.
