Tape: Your Last Line of Defense against Ransomware

Ransomware has been in the news a lot recently. Scams like CryptoLocker and WannaCry are rapidly becoming one of the biggest threats to corporate data. More and more criminal organizations are climbing on the ransomware bandwagon, and the financial impact is enormous.

LTO-7 Media: Potentially your last
line of defense against ransomware

One of the most important things a company can do to protect itself against ransomware attacks, is to make sure it has backup copies of its data. And there’s a simple and easy to remember rule when it comes to backups: we call it “3-2-1 data protection”:

  • 3 copies of your data
  • 2 different types of media (tape and disk, for example)
  • 1 copy offline and off-site

The 1 offline copy is the most important component of ransomware protection. Why?

When ransomware enters your systems, usually through a PC, it begins to encrypt your data and can target network-attached storage (NAS), virtualization, online collaboration tools, and more.

Offline copies of your data are the only safe files, simply because criminals can’t delete or encrypt what they can’t access over the network.

You can consider a couple different strategies to manage offline copies. Most companies opt to use a small tape library and tape rotation system. Tape rotation and off-site storage of backup copies also prevent any danger of data loss from fire, flood, or other natural disasters at the physical site of your data center.

The bottom line? Ransomware-style cyber attacks may be common and difficult to stop completely, but a best practice backup strategy that includes multiple copies of data on different kinds of media, including tape, can eliminate or minimize data loss.
